About the Artist

Where It All Began:

 

Hi, I'm Tricia Massie, the artist behind Written on the River.Long before I ever picked up a marker, I was surrounded by something that would quietly shape the heart behind my business—family, community, and Cajun hospitality.I grew up in Lafayette, Louisiana, in a family deeply rooted in the restaurant business. My grandparents founded Dwyer's Cafe, a place that later became my parents' and is now proudly owned and operated by my brothers. Growing up there, I experienced the beauty of South Louisiana culture every day. Locals gathered around the tables for fresh coffee, a good meal, and even better company. Stories were shared, friendships were formed, and everyone was treated like family.Those early years gave me a deep love for Cajun culture and the small-town hospitality that makes our communities so special. It is that same spirit of connection and community that inspires every piece I create today.

 

Finding Joy:

 

In 2021, as life slowly emerged from the pandemic, I began searching for a hobby. My word for the year was JOY, and I wanted to pursue something that brought happiness and creativity into my life.Remembering my childhood love of colorful handwriting and bubble letters, I ordered a hand-lettering practice book and eagerly got started. Though perfectionism often made me focus on flaws, my husband encouraged me to embrace my own unique style.Soon I began creating simple birthday cards to share with family and friends, and many encouraged me to sell them.

 

Learning Acceptance:

 

In 2022, my word for the year became Acceptance, and I said yes to attending an ACTS Retreat. Those four days renewed my confidence and inspired me to create the Written on the River Facebook page.While on the retreat, I prayed for financial opportunities for my family, never imagining that God would answer that prayer through me. A faceless painting of Jesus from the retreat inspired one of my earliest pieces and became a reminder to trust Him.

 

Trusting God Through Every Design:

 

Requests for custom cards and artwork soon began arriving. My response became simple: 'I don't know if I can create it, but I will try.'That phrase continues to guide me today as I trust God with every new idea and opportunity.

 

Written on the River Today:

 

What began with hand-lettered cards has grown into a collection of artwork featured on greeting cards, mugs, tumblers, tea towels, coasters, ornaments, and gifts celebrating the places, people, and memories that mean the most.My work can be found in retail shops throughout Acadiana, with my largest selection available at Boho in Lafayette, Louisiana. I continue to share my art through social media and www.writtenontheriver.com with the hope of spreading joy to others.
